Child Support
Georgia, on January 1, 2007, adopted a “shared income approach” to child support obligations. The law now recognizes that both parents have a joint obligation to contribute to the support and well-being of the child. The following is an example of the basic child support obligation:

Each parent is jointly responsible to support their child. Georgia law permits variations from the above child support obligation based on pre-existing circumstances (e.g., child-care expenses, child healthcare costs, etc.). Generally, the child support obligation continues until the child reaches the age of majority (18 years old), unless the parents agree otherwise.
